Arrived in Mae Sot and got some bad news. Pee Noy my friend here in Mae Sot that I have known since 2013 has passed away. He was a kind hardworking man who always treated me with such kindness, he was always smiling. Khun Noy died in 2020 about 1 year and 10 months ago. His window now lives alone, they had no children. When I spoke to her about her husband she started to cry. She will be alone for the rest of her life.
Pee Noy kept his illness from her until the pain was very bad. On admission to hospital he was immediately admitted into ICU. Noy spent 3 months in ICU. The day that the family were going to move him to a better hospital (after borrowing money for transport) he passed away from blood poisoning.
I was shown a photo of him in hospital. Pee Noy was laying in bed with tubes everywhere, so thin and frail. He was almost unrecognizable. Like many people who go to hospital he was trying to pull the tubes out so the nurses had to restrain his arms.
Pee Noy was. 68 when he died. I will miss him he was a good man. I will remember the small kind things he would do. He took me to the dump for the first time in 2013, on a motorbike that I would rent from him years later (for about 5 months, in 2018 and 2019). He would always give me some free traditional Thai made ice cream when I would pass by his rural shop. During the early years when he drove me to and picked me up at the dump (2013, 2015-2016-2017) in his truck. Pee Noy would also bring me a cold bottle of water to drink. After photographing in the hot sun, covered in flies and garbage, having a cold drink in an a/c truck was a real blessing.
I worry about his widow, he was in charge of the house and businesses, he always took good care of her. He never played around, dd not drink or smoke too much, he was a good man. Now that he is gone she must manage everything alone. She has some brothers and sisters nearby to help her but no children.
The photo below is from a screen capture of a video I did of the dump from 2013. The video was from when he took me to the dump for the first time.
Here is the 2013 Dump video for those interested.
