I have noticed a disturbing trend over many trips to South East Asia, there is a tendency from the expat community to be arrogant and superior to the locals. There is often a "I am smarter then them" thingy.
Just because people do things differently than you, does not mean their way is wrong or your way is best. I generally have no problem with locals in whatever country I visit but when it comes to hanging with the expat community in these places, sometimes my skin crawls. The locals come from vibrant ancient cultures with grand traditions, lets give them their do and not be so superior.
