Getting To The Next Level, How?

Got the wonderful book "salt & truth" today by Shelby Lee Adams. This man has taken the art of 4x5 portraiture to a whole other level. He has found a wonderful subject/people he passionately believes in and has created imagery of great power.

How the hell do I even get close to that level of work? How do I make pictures that speak like his do.

Ok I can technically shoot a 4x5 to make portraits now, but how do I really do this? How do I get to that next level of expression and creativity?

I need to push myself harder and forget all the rejection crap. I need to make pictures that matter to me, that sing to me.
