Quote: Emily Carr (Painter, Writer)

"...maybe it is best to think things out for yourself and not be swayed by what others say."

JMW... she was writing about how she was deaf and that maybe it was better she could not hear the opinions of others. I think too many people worry about that. Things like portfolio reviews. People pay lots of money for the opinions of others. WHO CARES. I never understood the portfolio review thingy. If your trying to be an artist, follow your heart, nuff said. 🙂

MC...yes to a degree. I feel thou that great art is achieved with a unique individual vision. Others might contribute, but when it comes down to it, greatness comes out of the individual, that person's expression, hopes, thoughts, heart etc. To have that individuality and unique spirit you need to find your own way. You also need to step over and beyond all the nay sayers, the folks in your life that say "it must be this way" or "you're wasting your time you will never achieve anything". The individual artistic fire to achieve is often inspired by the negatives that come from those around you. At least that's the way it has worked with me. People are always telling me I can't do stuff. It is important to find your own individual path and ignore those that say no.

    • Gerry Yaum agreed. The part of the journey of this unique individual is wading through rivers of currents, which are pushing on him or she. This person's strength is tested through this process. Some will emerge with true originality, some will be swept away.
