Blowout On Highway 2 North

On the way home from Calgary we had a minor accident. It was around 345am, we were on highway 2 heading North when there was a large shotgun like BOOM (earlier we had drove over something), followed by the sound of ripped up tires hitting the highway! I slowed down as quickly as I could and pulled off to the shoulder of the highway in complete darkness. This is what I found!

The 2 right rear dually tires were gone, the side of the motorhome fiberglass had also exploded outward. We called AMA road service and they had us out of danger in about 1 hour 30 minutes, maybe a bit less. It was amazingly quick. We needed two tow vehicles, one for the motorhome, one for the trailer. AMA provided both fast. The motorhome as taken out on a flat bed trailer pulled by a semi truck, the darkroom trailer was pulled out by a tow truck. Everyone was very efficient, friendly and calming. The tows were free, part of my membership. We were about 34 km South of Leduc but my AMA membership (RV Premier) had coverage all the way from Calgary.

What the damage looked like in daytime

Luckily because we hit something on the road the our insurance will pay for all damages mines the $1000 deductible. I had to jump through lots of hoops (AMA Insurance, Police report, AMA claims, Appraiser) but things seem to be going in the right direction. The accident happened on Sunday, today is Thursday and the motor home FANNY is in the tire shop getting new tires put on. I will have to drive it out to Tofield, Albert to get the body work repaired. My goal is to get everything completed by September 20, when I plan to drive down to Dinosaur Provincial parks to do 16x20 Ambortype Diptychs for AMBROTOS KANATA.

All in all we got off rather lucky, nothing too major, no one hurt, all will be OK and we can continue AMBROTOS KANATA. Incidents like this are just something you need to overcome, when your chasing impossible dreams like capturing Canada on ambrotype.

Note* I plan on getting all 4 rear tires replaced and install a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) so this problem does not happen again. I want driving piece of mind, so am willing to pay for it.
