77mm Hoya Close Up Filters

Got me some used Hoya close up filters. The regular price new is $168 CAD, I paid $79 CAD used. I am hoping to use the filters with my XCD Blad kens. I want the ability to do tight headshots on high end digital cameras. I could then print the tight headshots VERY large for maximum humanizing effect.

If this works, I might be able to move forward with my haunted LOST INNOCENCE photography project I have thought about those stories, those photographs for years. Let’s see how things go!

Notre* The optical glass of the Hoya filers should be of better quality.

Note** I used close up filters successfully when I shot Rolleiflex film cameras in the dump.

Got The Cover, FINALLY, "Black & White Photography Magazine"

After going 0-5 in mags with no cover, finally got the "Black & White Photography Magazine" June, 2023 issue cover.

The O-5 non covers, went like this.

- "PhotoED" Mag- A photo plus short story was published, no cover.

- "Shades of Grey" online mag, THE FAMILES OF THE DUMP, no cover.

- "Shades of Grey" online mag. THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE UNDER THE FREEWAY, no cover.

- "Silvergrain Classics" paper magazine, THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP, no cover.

- "Analog Forever" paper magazine, THE FAMILES OF THE DUMP, no cover.

Finally, a cover with "Black & White Photography Magazine" Now the images might be noticed. Probably the biggest circulation magazine the work has been shown in, with a cover photo to boot!

Note* I was ask to hold off publishing the cover online until April 12. The magazine goes on sale April 12, 2023. Please buy one at your local magazine stand!

Making New And Updating PDF Submission FIles.

I have no shows scheduled. Updating my submission files with new pics, most shot in 2022. Also upgraded the CV. I need to send out a bunch more submissions. I need something to look forward to! I want to continue telling the stories. Need to do submission files for some of the other projects as well. Hopefully by this fall will have enough work to do a small submission of the ambrotype project.


Should be returning later in 2023, to hand out donations "under the freeway" and make new pictures.

Image/size/quality rather shitty, just screen captures. I need to organize my life's work in photography. I need to get things together. So many images forgotten, so many negs lost, so many digital files misplaced. Heck I even have lots of film undeveloped, some over 20 years old. After retirement, I should have more time and energy to get things together, HOPE HOPE!

Indonesian Word Of The Day!!

Cheaper/Better Buys From My Work Site?

I checked with the safety guy at the petrochemical plant where I work as a security. I asked him about buying goggles, headlamps and gloves using the onsite contract for cheaper prices. The PPE quality of the goods should be first rate as they are used on site. If I can also get cheaper prices, then all is good! So far the messaging with my onsite safety friend is positive. 

If this is a go, and if I go to Indonesia. I plan on buying 20-30 goggles, 20-30 headlamps and 20-30 sets of gloves to hand out to the workers in Indonesia. Most of the goods would probably be given out to the miners digging for Sulphur in the Mt. Jen volcano on Java Island.

I am worried about 2 things, first the cost of buying the items in Canada and second the corruption in Indonesia. Indonesia was ranked as the worst country in the world in regards to corruption. I worry that the goods might be taken away from me, stolen, at the airport by customs before I have a chance to hand them out for free to the people who need them most!

Note* PPE stands for personal protection equipment. Used to ensure the highest safety for the worker.

A Couple Of Photo Related Things

 A couple bits of photo related news today.

- The UNB will send the remaining photos visa Fed Ex to my home in Edmonton tomorrow. I hope to sell some of these works to make more donation money for the people in the pictures. Or if I cannot sell them maybe I can exhibit them again somewhere, sometime. Worse comes to worse, I will frame some and put them up in my home, to remind me "what is important}.

- Black & White Photography Magazine asked for my home address so they could ship me a copy of the magazine that will feature and interview and photos from the 2 Thai projects, THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP and THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE UNDER THE FREEWAY. The issue will hit the new stands June of 2023.

Studying Indonesian History

Having some difficulty finding books on Indonesia. This one by Richard Lloyd Parry is a keeper and recommended. "In The Time of Madness". It deals with the time in Indonesia history after the 30 dictatorship of President Suharto and his family.

Strong book from Mr. Parry.

Gear Lining Up For Next Trip

I believe I have all the gear I need for my next trip. Got me a used Macbook Air, 2 5TB hardrives, a Canon 5D Mark 4 and 2 Hasselblad X1D cameras. I also have the lens from last trip which created several strong images.

The Macbook Air will allow me to double back up all files each day of shooting. The computer is super light and still near top of the line (I paid about 1/2 the cost of a brand new unit).

I will go to Indonesia, am trying to learn the language now.

All looking good!
