I am constantly disappointed with the level of passion and originality in the local Edmonton focal club scene. All the clubs I know of, Images, Cross, St. Alb, and Mono seem to suffer from the same disease, indifference (at various levels) to photography, and making the same exact pictures as the rest of the world. Almost no one seems able to think outside the box, most no one is truly passionate about photography, a passion there photography is there main reason for living.
It is all so disappointing. Almost all the photos they make today will be forgotten tomorrow. Some individuals in those clubs must be trying to reach a bit outside the standard but you rarely see it. There seems to be a lack of devotion to the craft and the study of work made in the past. To put it bluntly "No one seems to give a shit!" This is one of the bad things about living in smaller city like Edmonton, the creativity and passion for photography is so mediocre. If I lived in New York, or San Francisco, heck even Vancouver I would likely be surrounded with individuals truly passionate about making creative and original photographs.
At least there is online inspiration, Facebook and other outlets are filled with those who truly love the glories of making a photograph. So many there who put photography first.
