I sometimes do see Japanese people laughing and having fun on the strreets, especially in the shopping area around Tokyo. They still do not interact much with strangers but quite often I have seen friends having fun together. I would guess friendships allow for expressions of intimacy and joy more her in Japan than elsewhere as there seem to be limited ways in the culture to allow those held in emotions to fly free. Friendships provide an outlet for the emotions to fly free.
I remember on 2 different occasions seeing young women friends run into each other’s arms with loud cries and expressions of joty. Their faces lit up with real, true happiness on meeting each other.
