Newish Dump Self Portrait

Found this today, was playing with it a bit. Shot with a point and shoot digs camera back in 2017. At that time I was carrying my 5x7 inch Linhof in the garbage dump in Mae Sot working on the project THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP. Shot all the 5x7 images on Tri-x, got to love that wonderful film

$20 Added To Help The People In The Pictures

I added $20 to the donation total to help the people in the pictures for THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP and THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE UNDER THE FREEWAY. Forget to add it before, it comes from a kind gentleman (sorry forgot your name) who gave us the $20 after my artist talk in Winnipeg.

The donation total now sits at $4334.67 CAD. It will be used to buy goods to directly help the people in the pictures, with no waste or middleman involved. From you to them!

Just found this UNB shows link, not sure if I have posted it before.

Note* I need to update the old CV. Have, 2  Solo exhibitions, 3 paper mags, and 2 online mags (published) need to be added. Need also to start resubmitting the work with all the 2022 images added to the PDF submission links. So much paper work to do. This me, myself and I doing most everything thing. IS TIRING! :) Sometimes there seems to not be enough hours in the day to get it all done. Then there is the whole photographing Canada thingy with the AMBROTOS KANATA project, but that's another story!

THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP And THE PEOPLE UNDER THE FREEWAY, Should Be In The June 2023 Version Of Black And White (B&W) Magazine

Doing an interview tomorrow for B&W Magazine. It looks like the June 2023 issue of the magazine will carry some of the stories and photographs. Thanks so much David for finding the work, thanks so much Dean for allowing the stories into your wonderful world class photography magazine.

Self Portrait with the children at the dump 2013

Note* This will be the 3rd interview in the last 2-3 months. Did one for a newspaper and one for an arts radio program as part of the UNB Fredericton exhibitions, now one for B&W magazine. More interviews were done at earlier times, for other magazines and exhibitions.

Interviews are always fun. Talking about what you love is always a joyous experience. My main problem is I get too excited with it all and tend blabber on too much. Will try to keep things battened down a bit this time.

Black And White (B&W) Magazine Link

Here is the mag the interview and photos will be in. This magazine is available at my local Chapters/Indigo book store. It will bee cool to be shown in the same magazine like many of my fav photographers.

THIS IS  A WORLD GLASS LEVEL PUBLICATION, check it out if you have not read it before!

https://www.bandwmag.com

Note* I have had several long conversations with Jock Sturges on the telephone. He is a decent fellow who helped me with my photography, very opening and giving.  It is rather cool to soon (June issue) to be published in the same magazine as he was.  Just pure luck on my part, thanks David for finding the images and supporting them, thanks Dean for allowing me to be part of B&W, it is a true honour.

One of my favourite issues of B&W magazine. Love the Sturges article and images. Photo by Jock Surges.

3rd Magazine Story, Seems A Go

If this happens it would be the 3rd paper magazine story on the work,#1 Silver Grain Classics and #2 Analogue Forever, I will be the 5th if you count thee 2 online mags "Shades of Grey".

I think I am getting a bit ho hum about this sort of thing. It is alway nice to meet thee work published shared, to spread the word but my attitude has changed a bit. Thee first time I was super excited, thee second time I was kinda excited, this time its like "well that is nice, thanks".

Added $4000 To The Donation Total, Thank You Marie M

I added the $4000 CAD, which was paid for the 4 exhibition prints by the University of New Brunswick to the donation totals for next trip. I will use the money to help those under the freeway in Klong Toey slum and at the dump in Mae Sot.

4 large photos were added to the UNB Permanent Collection. So years after I am dead they may be hung. There is something selfishly comforting in that thought!

Thank you Marie for caring!!

$4000 CAD To Help Those In Need

Years ago a photo club member and I had an argument. My view was that photography could be a powerful force for good. That it could make a positive change in the lives of the people photographed and could change the world for the better. The man I was arguing with was photographically lazy, older and rather bitter. He was pissed at life in general. He told me, "No", that photography could not do any of those things and that I was naive and foolish to think so. Even back then I thought, "What kind of photographer does not love the beauty, wonder and power of photography?"

He motivated me, made me want to prove him wrong, I worked harder.

Today I got this email from the good folks at the UNB Art Centre/Accounting. The money will be used to "make a positive change in the lives of the people photographed". It will buy food, headlamps, boots, medicines, toys, working tools, etc.

Photography DOES HAVE the ability, the strength and the power to make the world a better place!

"STORM" Ambrotypes?

This week off have been doing some cleaning around the house, the darkroom and elsewhere. Also doing lots of reading. Just did studying on the painter Turner. He would paint STORMS. Made me think if such a thing could be possible to do as Ambrotypes. Maybe if I placed the camera in a tent to protect it from the elements. It would no doubt be very difficult, but that is part of the fun.

Something to think about some more. I might be able to make it happen. This subject could be part of the long term Ambrotype AMBROTOS KANATA project. Possibly shooting the Northern oceans!

Dream Come True Type Stuff

On a very selfish personal note. The great Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky is part of the UNB permanent collection at the Art Centre (he donated work).  Burtynsky is a guy who I have always looked up to and admired. I have many Edward Burtynsky photo books, have studied his photography extensively and look up to him as a role model.

Now to have 4 or my images in the same collection as Burtynsky, feels good! There is a possibility long after I am dead that a Burtynsky print and a Yaum print will hang side by in the same show at the Art Centre or elsewhere.

Whats not to love about that! Dream come true type stuff.

The 4 Images Bought For The UNB Permanent Collection.

Here are the  4 images bought for the University of New Brunswick (UNB)  permanent Art Collection. This raised $4000 CAD to help the families and the people under the freeway, THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTURES!

Here are the 4 prints that the gallery bought for their permanent collection. All other exhibition prints sent in early links will be forwarded to me in January. I will be selling those photographs as well to raise more money to help the people in the dump and the people who live under the freeway. 100% of money earned goes directly back to buying goods for "the people in the pictures".

These are very large, wall sized images. If anyone is interested please let me know. Any reasonable offer will be accepted.  I just want to raise funds to help those in need.

"I am a red man. If the Great Spirit had desired me to be a white man he would have made me so in the first place. He put in your heart certain wishes and plans, in my heart he put other and different desires. Each man is good in his sight. It is not necessary for Eagles to be Crows."

Cleaning Studio

Trying to clean some space in the studio. 5x7 inch camera to the left 35x35 inch in the back. 16x20 inch in the box and 20x24 inc on the floor right.

The goal this winter is to be shooting some 16x20 and 20x24 plates semi competently in studio. With the hope that in the spring I can go out into the field where things are more difficult and make ambrotypes in the larger sizes. At least I can try.

I need to get out into the world shooting the 35x35 before I am too old and broken down.

Chess board table $25 CAD from Goodwill. Checkout out our cat Dimsum in pic #1 and 2. He follows me around the house.
