At 60, Ambrotype Making Needs Recovery

Ambrotype making takes a lot out of me at 60. Slept till past noon today.my day of recovery. Was washing ambrotypes till 430am last night. I still need to pack the plates (they are outside the motorhome in a rack) clean the trailer and filter the silver.

Am figuring out systems for the larger plates. Want to shoot Lake Winnipeg next. Will probably do 24x24 inch glass for that abandoned Saskatchewan church we found earlier on the way back. Might need to order and pick up more glass in Calgary.

Ambros Soon!!!

ELOG: August 15, 2024

I was reading and listening to music on headphones and heard a noise like someone was breaking into the RV. Thought it was my imagination. On the second round of noises, I turned on a bigger light. Found the little orange one playing with a dead mouse on the carpet in front of the fridge. Next time I turned the light on he was licking his lips and demanding his  nightly cat food meal at midnight. I guess the mouse was a bonus.

He is a great mouser. A rescue cat who spent the first 8 months of his life as a stray. In the photo he hears a fly. He can catch them with his paws. Eats them, as well. More wild kingdom action tonight!

Dimsum LOVES camping!

Winnipeg: Loaded Down with Books!

The motorhome “Fanny” is really loaded down as is the trailer ‘Freddy”.
Unloaded 5 of the 8 boxes. After 52 years the boxes smell musty..

I should be making Ambrotypes of Lake Winnipeg in two days. Feel the NEED TO CREATE!!!

Note* This is part of my executor duties for Dennis. Will try and donate the books as he wanted.

A Fun Read!

A fun read $4.20 CAD at Value Village with the (ick, ick) Senior Discount!

An Ambrotype Subject for Return

Found this on todays drive. Will try to photograph this abandoned Saskatchewan Church on our return to Alberta. Will stay overnight in the almost abandoned town for 1 or 2 nights.l to get the ULF Ambrotypes made.

With ambrotypes it is a slow and steady process. You need to find a strong subject then spend a day or two making images.

This church should be both a good and historic subject.

Culture Shock!!

Before my first visit to Thailand in 1996 I read the book, “ CULTURE SHOCK: THAILAND”. I found it quite helpful. Will read the Philippine version.

5 People in a 7000 Peso Home

I am searching for a place in Manila to live in for 4 months while I do my photo work. While doing my search for a room between 10000 and 25000 Philippine pesos a month. I came upon a post.

The post writer said they were searching for a place for 5 people and they had a budget of 7000 pesos a month.

I keep thinking of that family and how difficult their lives must be. 5 people in a 7000 peso home ($167 CAD). I live in such a privileged world. So many have so little.

There will be many important photo stories about many good people to tell there. Will use some of the Thai donation funds to help a little. I need to work harder at learning the history, culture and Tagalog language of the Philippines.

Video: Forest 11x14 and 14x14 Ambros

Going to try to vary the subject matter somewhat this next 3 week trip. But here are some 11x14 (3mm thick clear glass)and 14x14 (4mm thick clear glass). Forest Ambros shot a few weeks back.

I think the 11x14 Chamonix will be a main camera for the AMBROTOS KANATA project. It has a better size plate than the small 8x10s but is still fairly easy to shoot with. A nice combination!!!

Link: Slums in Manila

"Slums are now scattered over 526 communities in all cities and municipalities of Metro Manila, housing 2.5 million people on vacant private or public lands, usually along rivers, near garbage dumps, along railroad tracks, under bridges and beside industrial establishments."

"With a steadily growing metropolitan area, Metro Manila is subject to a densifying population of slum dwellers—a 2014 article states that Manila has an estimated 4 million people living in slums, out of a total population of 21.3 million."

SLUMS IN METRO MANILA

Note* I am looking for stories in Manila to tell in photographs, and people to help with past earned donation money.

Window

Was thinking how my WINDOW for making ambrotypes for the AMBROTOS KANATA project, is now! We have such a limited time in this world. Life is a precious gift that does not last forever. I need to use my small window in time to create important imagery, Ambrotypes that will continue to inspire, after my time runs out.

Video: Faure’s Requiem

This piece of music we played at my friend Dennis’s funeral. His choice, it is part of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem. Rather haunting.

Having Dennis’s classical music collection at my fingertips, has opened brand new worlds to me. I am visiting places I might never have found.

Thank you Dennis.

3 Week Trip

Super Sized Drying Racks

Here is a purchase I received today from Czechia. Drying racks for my wet plate photo project AMBROTOS KANATA. The 2 smaller (now have 3 in this size) are for plates measuring up to 24x24 inches. The larger one is for plates measuring 35x35. I will probably need to buy another 2 in this size in the future. I will use the racks to hold the cleaned plates, to dry the washed completed plates and to use after varnishing.
