The first time ever that my photos have been in a real hard copy, print edition magazine, it only took 42 years of effort :). Started photography at 14 am now 56. Did another buy of Chemistry. This time from Antique Pictureology in Nova Scotia. Dale Wilson runs the site and is a Facebook friend.

Enough buying chemicals for now!! I think I have everything I need to make Collodion now. I forgot to order Ammonium Iodide, will do that as well.

First Wet Plate Collodion Chemistry Buys

Did my first raw chemical by for wet plate collodion.  The idea is to start to do wet plate work, beginner wet plate work in 4x5 this summer and fall after I set up the new darkroom trailer. I plan on continuing that trailer build this coming week off work now that the snow has melted.

Today's buy from 2 sources, eBay (free shipping from Poland) and Xenox Laboratories Inc (free delivery with a $200 CAD order) included. The total cost for the 2 buys was around $426 CAD .

- Cadmium Iodide 50 grams bottle

Made A Submission To Be A Featured Artist For Edmonton Arts

Did a submission to the Edmonton Arts people. They do small features in their email send outs, on various Edmonton artists. Not really a self promoting type of guy (why I use the pseudonym YAUM) but felt this might be a good opportunity to promote the photo stories I am working on in Thai, especially, THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP.

A little bit raising awareness on forgotten lives, is never a bad thing. I hope my submission is accepted, and promoted by the EAC, Edmonton Arts Council.

Anapon And His Flower

Anapon In His Room With Damaged Foot, 2019

A new photo Anapon. Khun Anapon is a man who I have been photographing since around 2012. He is the first man I met under the freeway and has become a friend of sorts.

An ex Muay Thai boxer athlete, Anapon now has a badly damaged-deformed foot and can barely walk. He told me if he walks a short distance he is fine but any attempts at longer distances is painful. Khun Anapon lives in a tiny 10x6 foot room made of found boards under the freeway In this photo of him, he is sitting in the doorway of that room. You can see his badly injured left foot. Anapon usually hides the foot from me but as we have gotten to know and trust each other, he is now more open about his handicap. Year in and year out when I return to Klong Toey slum in Bangkok I find him, in the same place, doing the exact same thing. Anapon just sits and stares out of his home into the darkness. Nothing much ever changes for him.

I love that he took the time to attach a small white plastic flower in his doorway, just above his head. A bit of beauty in a drab boring existence.

 Started to work on TH E PEOPLE WHO LIVE UNDER THE FREEWAY photos for the later issue of "Shades of Grey:Fine Art Photography magazine. I will also use some of these files for the "Under the Freeway" section of the Art Center show at the University of New Brunswick show in 2022. I have not really dived into this project yet, I hope to photograph many more lives "under the freeway" and will try to tell the stories in an more in depth way on my eventual return to the Land of Smiles in late 2020 (I hope).

CAMBODIAN BROTHEL

An old photo from 2003. This young Vietnamese worker is in the short time room she took her customers, mostly Cambodian men at $2 USD a time. I was told some of the workers went with up to 10 men a day. The hardest and most ugly place I ever made photographs. I still think back to these forgotten women/girls and their terrible lives. Many of them had been trafficked and sold into sexual slavery by their own families. Many no doubt died ugly AIDS or drug related deaths. I hope some of the women who worked this place eventually found families of their own and happier lives.

Note* The original is on Agfa Optima 400 film. I also included a digital b/w conversion version  The photographs were shot in near complete darkness. I could only see where the worker was when the flash went off.

11 Hour Sleep And Feeling Better

Gosh I went to lay down for a couple of hours even thou I was not very tired and woke up 11 hours later! Was in sleep mode between 6pm and 5 am. I do not think I even needed a bathroom pee break during the sleep, which is weird for a 56 year old dude. Was reading a fascinating book on Diego Rivera before sleeping, he was writing about his meeting with Joseph Stalin (signed one of his drawings), the book is called "My Art, My Life: An Autobiography" Diego Rivera.

I have always been a pretty long and good sleeper,  I just follow my body there. I have always tried to wake up when I do not feel like sleeping any longer (unless I am forced to wake up to do something). Never did any drugs in my life so I think that helps with the ability to sleep. The closest drug I take to a dangerous drug is caffeine in tea and soft drinks. Never did hard or soft drugs in my life, never do over the counter medications unless I cannot avoid them, never taken a sleeping pill in my life, never smoked, do not drink alcohol (never been drunk in my life) etc. I think having a generally clean mostly chemical free body helps you sleep better, that's my theory anyway.

Feel fresh and recharged now. I just had a nice shower and will spend the day scanning old negs and making a few digital prints, later in the day I will probably take a nap before going to work at night in the wet darkroom for 5 or 6 hours on a print of 3 friends in a hammock at the dump. I did the masks and test strips for that negative earlier this week. Then it is back to work Monday night for another week in the security guard shack.  The work week awaits, I need to get my beauty sleep for that as well!!

Newest effort..maybe a tad green tone, and can't get the fly right on the child's face... need to do some editing on that so you can see it easier...when I was shooting the photo I saw it, now need to print it so can see it...Photographed this boy in 2013, 2015, 2016 but have not seen him the last few years at the dump...I wonder what happened to him, and where he is now in this Corona ravaged world....this is also a 17x22 paper print, neg is 120 Tri-x from a Rolleiflex

Magenta Cast In Prints

Getting a bit of a cyan cast in some photos also. Been reading online about this problem but have not really been able to reduce much. Epson P800 printer, printing out of Lightroom.

First Large Prints on 17x22 Paper

A couple of the first attempts at bigger prints on 17x22 inch paper. Having trouble centring the images. Also having trouble getting them to look similar in tone. Were getting there thou, bit by bit. Need 12 of these for the library presentation.

Yesteday's Darkroom And DIgital Print Work

Yesterday did some constructive work for a change. Was in the darkroom for about 6 hours, setting things up and printing masks for 3 THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP negs. Will return today to work on one of those negatives (3 young friends in a hammock), a happier dump image. I will try to post some of that darkroom work, maybe a video of the processing or you all to see later.

Also last night I did up some digital work on 5x7 paper. My Mac computer screen is not calibrated to the printer well. I am a crappy digital printer guy but did my best to make up some small prints of the images I like. During this stay at home time I plan on making up some semi large prints for a possible Library show. Last year I had promised a local library to do a small show of THE FAMILIES OF THE DUMP for them, probably 12 or so prints. I did not complete that obligation, sort of lost interest in it. I feel bad about that and need to rectify that situation. Now is a good time to make up those matted digital Library show prints and have them ready for exhibition (sort of an exhibition) when that library reopens after Corona. I think this is more of an information thing, spreading the word, telling stories to a larger audience, not a REAL show. I should improve my digital printing skills doing this, so that is a nice bonus.
